Trust, certainty and human relationships |
| |
The word trust comes from the Medieval English word traiste meaning " to have faith or confidence; to place reliance; to confide". Hence to "trust" something is to be confident in the reliability that something is what it seems. |
| |
Unlike words such as verify and validity, trust is the assumed belief something is true. In many cases the evidence that we accept to make such a judgment may be superficial and in many cases may simply be on face value e.g."he is wearing a suit, looks like a good person and appears to act like one." |
| |
We rely on trust to be able to communicate and to communicate quickly an efficiently. Trust is an essential ingredient in enabling individuals to function openly and effectively in a society. |
| |
Therefore if trust is breached, either through deliberate behaviour of deceit or through a lack of moral integrity, the openness and effective interaction of citizens of that society are significantly weakened. |

The maintenance of trust and certainty through rules |
| |
Given the importance of trust, and given the danger to the fabric of society if trust between relationships is severely damaged, it is necessary for the community to establish safeguards and rules concerning the function of relationships to ensure certainty and consistency. |
| |
This includes (but is not restricted to) the expected standards of behaviour of people in positions of authority, the honest and truthful behaviour of witnesses in courts of law and the honorable behaviour of partners in a legal marriage. |
| |
While on the one hand such rules in themselves place restrictions upon people that ordinarily go against many of the notions of freedom of choice and honoring the hope that people will do the "right" thing, without such rules, our society could not function properly. |
